Fire
The symbolism of Fire is pretty ancient, as with most elements. It can even be rooted back to ancient Greek (Roman?) philospher Heraclitus, who symbolized the nature of the world with fire--something that is constantly changing. He used this metaphor as a motive for war, as war brings destruction, but also a plane for rebirth. Aside from representing destruction, it also represents knowledge. In ancient mythology, Prometheus brought fire, the symbolism of knowledge, to man, which ultimately risked the wrath and power of the Titans. Despite being a symbolism of destruction, it is also a spurer of purification and emotion (especially love). In Eastern philosphy (Taosim), it is the manisfestation of Yang, the bright, warm, masculine, active force.

Water
As it is theorized that life came with water, water symbolizes birth and life. Unlike fire, which symbolizes change, water represents fluid or dyanmic stability. The first (recorded) philosopher Thales believed that the "First Principle" of everything (the identical core value) was water. Essentially, he believed that it was the most neccessary element. In Eastern philosphy (Taosim), it is the manisfestation of Yin, the cool, dark, feminine force, nonactive force. Although our lives are constantly changing, and we work to try and change it, Taosim advocates 'nonaction', so nature can run its course, just as rivers eventually flow back to the ocean.

So what the hell is the point of this picture
Gosh, I really do ramble a lot. Excuse me, I like to ramble about the meaning of my so-called-art because I read too much philosophy and put too mcuh thought into my OCs.

Anyway, this peice is meant to be a symbolic representation of the two forces, fire and water, in conflict with eachother. The two characters are Yu-Lao (The male, in black), and Skye (The female, in white). Although it appears that Skye is bringing the fire, and Lao is bringing the water, it is actually the other way around: Lao is drowning in the elements of water, and is using fire to evapourate the water and free himself, causing Skye to be enfulged in his flames. As an attempt to escape the fire, she in turn brings upon water, only to drown Lao in its nature. It's like a cycle, really.

This really is just my take on these two character's nature, and the childhood that build their characters. Both of Lao's parents, for example, have died in water-related incidents (mother drowning herself, and father drinking water poisoned by his mother). In constrast, Skye's family perished in a self-caused house fire. Although they did not have a direct impact on eachother's tragedy, their natures did, and always will.

Lao will always attempt to change the world, even if that means burning it or destroying it, because the static fashions of life do not appeal to him. He likes change and manipulation. Conversely, Skye wishes for dynamic stability. Although recoginizing that "you do not step in the same river twice" (Eastern philosphy ref), the river is still a river. There are some things that do not change.

But this is why these two can never be together. Although they need eachother's essence to survive, as yang and yin do, or light and darkness, putting the two together will ultimately cause conflict. They are so incredibly similar, but their natures are sharply opposite. Lao brings change in Skye, while Skye tries to sustain stability. Skye, in turn, tries to bring him peace, but he wants war.
